Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery said after the team’s optional practice on Wednesday that defenseman Jakob Chychrun, who left Tuesday’s 5-3 win over the New York Rangers with an upper-body injury after playing just 1:50, is out day-to-day. Carbery did not comment on Chychrun’s status for Thursday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens (7 PM ET, Monumental Sports Network in-market, ESPN+ out-of-market).

A play where Chychrun’s injury occurred has not been found but he left during the first period of Tuesday’s victory.

Carbery also said that defenseman Matt Roy, who has missed the past seven games with a lower-body injury suffered in Washington’s season opener on October 12, is “real close” towards returning but will not likely play on Thursday. The Capitals placed the 29-year-old on injured reserve on Monday but he has already served the seven-day minimum requirement to be placed on it, meaning he can play as soon as he is ready.

Roy participated in the team’s practice on Monday but did not take any contact.

Defenseman Alexander Alexeyev also did not participate in Wednesday’s optional practice due to personal reasons.

Washington, who is tied with the Carolina Hurricanes for the best points percentage (.750) in the Metropolitan Division with an 6-2-0 record, also hosts the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday evening before visiting the Carolina on Sunday.
