The Washington Capitals announced on Wednesday morning that they have re-signed defenseman Rasmus Sandin to a five-year contract that carries a $4.6 million cap hit. The 23-year-old could have become a restricted free agent on July 1.
Sandin has three goals, 20 points, a -9 rating, 46.89% five-on-five Corsi-for percentage, 46.6% five-on-five expected goals-for percentage, and 47.24% five-on-five scoring chances-for percentage in 52 games this season, where he has averaged 21:19 per game (second among Washington defensemen), including 1:19 on the power play (second) and 17 seconds on the penalty kill (eighth).
Rasmus Sandin, extended 5x$4.6M by WSH, is a second pairing offensive defenceman who moves the puck well. Has had some defensive growing pains in DC, especially when playing with Carlson, but skill is still evident. #AllCaps pic.twitter.com/EbpkjIbwpk

Washington acquired Sandin on February 28, 2023 from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for the 28th overall pick last June and defenseman Erik Gustafsson. The 29th overall pick in 2018 notched three goals and 15 points in 19 games after the trade last season.
In 211 career NHL games with Toronto and Washington, Sandin has 16 goals and 83 points.
Washington now has $13,574,167 remaining under the NHL salary cap next season with eight forwards, six defensemen, and two goaltenders under contract. Center Connor McMichael and left-wing Beck Malenstyn can also become restricted free agents after this season.
